The Transrotor Dark Star Reference is a massloaded, beltdrive, unsuspended turntable that builds on the original Dark Star by adding a dedicated Reference base for even greater mechanical grounding and pitch stability. Its architecture uses a thick 30 mm POM (polyoxymethylene) chassis and a matching 60 mm POM platter, materials chosen for their combination of high mass, internal damping, and immunity to temperature and humidityrelated warping, giving the deck a characteristically quiet, lownoise background.

Design and build

The Dark Star Reference retains the compact footprint of the standard Dark Star but couples the main plinth to a second Reference base that lowers the center of gravity and improves vibration draining into the support surface. All visible surfaces are finished in a matte black that minimizes visual distraction in a rack and visually “shrinks” the table, while the separate motor pod and record clamp add a purposeful, industrial aesthetic, looking compact and classy.

Chassis, platter, and bearing

The chassis is a 30 mm slab of POM, a dense engineering polymer also known as Delrin, used here as a constrained, nonresonant platform in place of traditional spring suspension. On top sits a 60 mm POM platter that combines substantial rotational inertia with excellent selfdamping, supported by a classic bronze or brass sleeve bearing with a hardened steel shaft and ceramic ball to keep friction and rumble vanishingly low.

Motor and power supply

A fully decoupled ACsynchronous outboard motor drives the platter via a thin belt, physically separated from the plinth so motor vibration does not feed back into the record/stylus interface. Speed control is handled by Transrotor’s Konstant series suppliesEins as standard with upgrade paths to Studio and higher—allowing fine 33⅓/45 rpm adjustment and cleaner drive voltage for improved timing and microdynamics.

Tonearm and configuration options

The Dark Star Reference is typically supplied with a Regapattern 9inch arm such as the RB330 or RB880, but the armboard system can be configured for other compatible arms to match different cartridges and system goals. Packages can be bundled with matched MM or MC cartridges and a heavy record clamp, giving buyers a coherent, readytoplay front end while still leaving room to upgrade arms, cartridges, and power supplies later.

Sonic character

The Dark Star platform has a very low noise floor, strong macrodynamic swing, and “black” backgrounds, traits that let subtle inner detail and spatial cues emerge without etch. The Reference base further tightens bass articulation and image focus, yielding a presentation that emphasizes grounded, stable imaging and longterm listen-ability rather than spotlighting artifacts or hyped leadingedge detail.
